Islamic feminists would point out that they are fighting to the right to *choose* their clothing (among other things obviously.) While some choose the veil for their own reasons, the key issue is *choice* and that the veil should not be forced upon any woman, as it has been. So deciding she's wearing too much clothing at the beach is completely discriminatory. Live and let live. If someone wants to swim in a veil, I should be able to swim next to her naked.

Your attitude makes things worse for those women It's no better than the kiss-and-run affair the Bush administration had with women in Afghanistan after we invaded, precisely because it's divorced from how we put the radical islamists (not the same as all people who are Muslims) in power, and how we are keeping them in power to serve our geopolitical interests. For women anywhere to acheive full human rights, for starters, outside support needs to come in the form of direct aid to them without geopolitical strings (let alone harranguing of their choice of worship), support of the International Criminal Court, and end to our cowboy adventures abroad, and discontinuing political, economic and military support of despotic regimes. Then once those citizens have a chance to establish economic opportunities, education and a life of civic participation with a functional social contract, they themselves can decide which traditions to keep and which to let go as antiquated and no longer of use. If you're really that concerned about the women, you could at least knock it off, put your money where your mouth is, and get your information from better sources. Don't you think the smallest of alarm bells should be going off about sounding just like right wing talk-radio?

It isn't merely arrogant It is the PRECISE same rationale behind the people she is decrying as being evil--the rationale that someone can aggressively force another to do what they "know" is best for them. This is the same rationale used by Islamists (not Islam) to take away women's rights. It looks like this: Problem: Islamic (sic) norms take away women's freedoms by forcing certain behavior on them Solution: Take away Muslims' (sic) freedoms by forcing different behavior on them. The inevitable follow-up argument, "The difference is, we're right!" is sort of a short hand for saying "We are a legitimate authority and they are not," but it still begs the question, "According to whom?!" This is the very terrible and frustrating paradox that I am currently trying to understand. So far, the best solution I have come up with is freedom. Freedom is the only thing I can see that provides a backdoor to authoritarian regimes, but the moment one tries to FORCE that freedom on someone else, they themselves undermine the very freedom they are preaching and become authoritarian themselves! So the way I see it, one cannot crush outside authoritarian regimes and retain any measure of legitimacy. Instead, it becomes necessary to offer a viable alternative that allows people who want it their own freedoms and choices, and to throw the doors open to anyone trying to escape authoritarianism. But the moment you start trying to violently crush it, you've become the monster you're fighting. Solution? I'm thinking Underground Railroad.

There are a lot of places in the world where women have a horrible time. The congo is another place that comes to mind, where all women everywhere have no right to a life without extreme violence. My initial reaction is to just get the un in there and evac all the women and leave the men to kill each other. I totally understand this mindset. My sweetie says give guns to the women - the first time I've EVER heard her say something like that. More guns in a war zone is not the solution. Evacuating all the civilians is not a solution either, because at some point everyone's going to have to go back home. I don't know what the solution is, but I do know it's not something we can just swoop in and fix. Fostering better government. Enforcing international human rights laws. I do think immigration should provide an outreach to families in these countries - if people want out they should be able to leave! But not to force them out, take over their countries and tell how they should want to live. That's their problem in the first place - their own governments are doing this to them. Yeah, I get you Ax.
