Of course I don't advocate their beliefs, but how is it illegal?

they are a tax exempt church not a PAC even HRC is not tax exempt. On the other hand NGLTF is. So contributions to NGLTF are tax deductible and to HRC are not even though their political goals are not that different, their activities are different enough to have different tax status because HRC functions like a PAC. It's a fine line between determining a tax exempt non profit EVEN one engaged in political activity and a taxable political lobbying group. I think that the Mormons have crossed the line. Maybe all their tithes spent on this should be taxed as income. I don't think it is persecution of religion to tax activities that are political not religious. Most non profit groups have to follow strict laws to maintain their status. Churches shouldn't be treated any differently.

nonprofits are not supposed to get involved in electoral activities to the point of telling people how to vote. Voter education is ok as long as it is impartial and nonpartisan. I've been waiting for this to happen, and I'm glad it finally has.

actually they can not support candidates but if they have done a formal study on an issue, and the issue comes up on the ballot, they can take a policy position. The amount of money directed directly and indirectly (by directing members to donate and phone bank) may have gone past that guideline in several churches/faith groups.
